WebBismuth (Bi) is a semimetal with unique physical properties. Its electron energy dispersion is very anisotropic, the effective masses of the carriers are small, and their free-flight distances are large. When the Bi layer is thinned to approximately 30 nm, it is converted from a semimetal to a semiconductor [ 1 ]. WebIn this work, we demonstrate that β-Bi with a buckled honeycomb structure experiences a topological transition from a normal insulator to a Z2 topological insulator induced by spin-orbit coupling, which subsequently increases the band degeneracy and is probably beneficial for enhancement of the thermoelectric power factor for holes.

WebA new mechanism is identified for doping semiconductors, based on modifications accomplished by impurity atoms deep in the valence band. (PDF) P-type doping of elemental bismuth with indium, gallium and tin: a novel doping mechanism in solids … WebBismuth telluride is a narrow-gap layered semiconductor with a trigonal unit cell. The valence and conduction band structure can be described as a many-ellipsoidal model with 6 constant-energy ellipsoids that are centered on the reflection planes. WebCesium and methylammonium bismuth iodides (Cs3Bi2I9 and MA3Bi2I9) are new low-toxic and air stable compounds in the perovskite solar cell family with promising characteristics. Here, the electronic structure and the nature of their optical transitions, dielectric constant, and charge carrier properties are assessed for photovoltaic applications with density … WebIn the absence of distortion bismuth would be a band insula- tor, instead it is a quite rare rhombohedral space group A7 (without inversion symmetry). Bismuth becomes a semimetal with very small ... WebDiamagnetism was first discovered when Anton Brugmans observed in 1778 that bismuth was repelled by magnetic fields. In 1845, Michael Faraday demonstrated that it was a property of matter and concluded that every material responded (in either a diamagnetic or paramagnetic way) to an applied magnetic field.
